Pricing & Access
Yes! SmileCharts is completely free for teachers. You can create unlimited behavior charts, translate them into any supported language, and print as many copies as you need. We may introduce optional premium features in the future, but the core functionality will always be free for educators.
No account is required. SmileCharts works entirely in your browser—just open the site and start creating. Your chart data is stored temporarily in your browser until you print or generate a QR code.
Privacy & Data
No. SmileCharts is designed with a "stateless" architecture—we never store student names, behavior goals, or any personal information on our servers. All data stays in your browser or is encoded directly into the QR code. This approach makes SmileCharts FERPA-friendly by design.
SmileCharts is built with FERPA compliance in mind. Because we don't collect or store any student data on our servers, there's no student data for us to protect or potentially breach. The student's first name (which is optional) and behavior goals exist only in your browser session and the generated QR code.
The chart data is stored in your browser's local storage, so it will persist until you clear your browser data or explicitly delete it. However, we do not have access to this data—it never leaves your device unless you print or share the QR code.
Features & Usage
After customizing your chart in the editor, click the "Print" button. This will open your browser's print dialog. For best results, use Portrait orientation and set margins to "Default" or "Narrow." The chart is designed to fit perfectly on a standard letter-size page.
Each printed chart includes a unique QR code that contains the chart data (goals, translations, etc.) encoded directly within it. When parents scan this code with their phone camera, they're taken to a mobile-friendly view showing the goals in their language—no app download required.
We currently support 15+ languages including Spanish, Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Vietnamese, Haitian Creole, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Tagalog, French, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Somali, and Burmese. We're continuously adding more languages based on educator feedback.
Yes! As long as you haven't closed your browser, you can return to the editor and make changes. The chart in your browser session will be preserved. However, once you print a chart with a QR code, that specific QR code will always show the original data—you'd need to print a new chart with an updated QR code for any changes.
Technical
SmileCharts works on all modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. For the best printing experience, we recommend using Chrome or Firefox. The mobile view (for parents scanning QR codes) works on any smartphone browser.
Yes! When parents scan the QR code and view the chart on their phone, they can tap the "Sign" button to add their digital signature. This signature is stored locally on their device and can be shown to the teacher as confirmation.
The core editing and printing features work offline once the page is loaded. However, the translation feature requires an internet connection to communicate with our translation service. We recommend translating your goals before going offline.
